When someone’s loved one is tragically taken away from them, the person fights for justice—but imagine the pain one mother is going through knowing that her daughter is dead but that there will be no justice.
Samantha Peters lost her 10-year-old daughter a little over a week after she was allegedly kicked in the stomach by one of her classmates.
A Post Mortem examination revealed that Rosanne Harris died from blunt trauma to the stomach which is consistent with a kick.
However, Peters said that she was informed by the police that Harris’s classmate cannot be charged since the law does not provide for criminal charges to be laid against a child.
Kaieteur News was informed that the Ministry of Education and authorities at the school along with the police will be working along with the child to provide counseling.
The police have so far questioned teachers, the victim’s family and the relatives of the little boy who reportedly kicked Rosanna at the St, Stephen’s Primary School located in Charlestown on March 24, last. The parties involved will have to return to the station on Monday.
Recalling what transpired, Peters said that three Fridays ago, her daughter came home complaining of not feeling well in her stomach. She said that when she asked what happened, her daughter responded that a student had kicked her to the stomach.
According to Peters, on Saturday and Sunday (March 25 and March 26, last) her daughter was complaining about pains and began vomiting. She said that the child’s father had gone to the school and enquired about the incident in the new week.
She said that Rosanne complained of feeling as if she had diarrhea but when taken to the washroom, she could not defecate.
Peters said that the following day when she checked on her daughter after waking up, she asked her if she wanted to get up and have a bath. She said that the child nodded in the affirmative. Peters said that she had left the room for a moment when heard her other daughter screaming.
According to Rosanne’s older sister, when she checked on her sibling and felt her arm, it was stiff and cold.
“When I raise up she hand, it didn’t stay up, it just fall right back down.” She said that there was blood running from her sister’s nose as her lifeless body lay on the bed.
Rosanne’s father, Randel Harris, in an emotional state, said that when he had visited the school concerning the issue, he did not want to engage in an unfriendly confrontation with the parent of the child who allegedly kicked his daughter. The child’s father said, “This come as a real shock.”
According to her mother, the family will have to find money to finance a funeral and that will be difficult.
