Quacy Murray, 34, of Cummings Lodge, Georgetown, was yesterday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and ordered to pay a fine of $4,719,000 after he pleaded guilty to a narcotics charge.
Murray appeared before City Magistrate Leron Daly where he pleaded guilty to having 3.13 kilograms of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking on April 5 at Square of the Revolution.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that on the day in question, police acting on information went to Square of the Revolution where they found Murray who was in a car at the location.
A searched was then carried out on the car during which the illicit substance was found in a haversack.
The Prosecutor further stated that Murray wrote his own caution statement where he admitted to owning the drugs.
Murray told the court that he was in a financial crisis at the time and was in need of money to take care of his family and that a friend gave him the marijuana to sell.
The tearful Murray who cried throughout the court proceedings told the court that he worked at GPL and begged the Magistrate to be lenient with him.
Murray further told the court that he is the sole breadwinner for his four children and asked for another chance to make things better.
However Magistrate Daly told the accused that he is a sensible grown man who should have known better and for that reason he has to be punished for his action.
Magistrate Daly noted that due to the fact that Murray had not wasted the court’s time she was giving him the minimum penalty that the charges attract.
When the Magistrate passed the custodial sentence, Murray and several of his relatives and friends who were seated in the courtroom broke down in tears.
