Andrew Ridley, 46, of Second Street, Islington Public Road, New Amsterdam Berbice was on Friday
remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on April 6, last, at Third Street, Islington Public Road, New Amsterdam Berbice, he had in his possession 3kg 322 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Ridley told the court that on the day in question he and a group of friends were drinking alcohol when the police came and told him to lie on the ground. Ridley stated that when the police conducted the search on him they did not find anything in his possession.
However, Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to bail being granted to the defendant. He told the court that on the day in question police officers were in the area carrying out a sting operation when the defendant spotted an officer and began running. The officer then gave chase after the defendant, who then threw a multi-coloured bag over a fence and jumped over the said fence.
Ridley was apprehended by another police officer while the officer who was giving chase retrieved the bag. After opening the bag, the officer saw the suspected cannabis wrapped in several transparent plastic bags.
Ridley was then arrested and charged for the offense. He was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance on April 26 at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
