Dear Editor,
An investigation is underway to restore a chain of events that led to the detonation of explosive device in the St. Petersburg subway on April 3, 2017. A second explosive device was swiftly detected and defused by FSB bomb squad. The Russian Investigative Committee said it has established the identity of a suicide bomber after examining the attacker’s remains from the blast site. The death toll continues to rise and has reached 14 persons.
The city subway has been operational according to regular schedule. The Russian authorities are taking necessary steps to strengthen security in the major cities of Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that terrorism is a crime against all humankind and all religions. He also stressed the need to step up the fight against terrorism, “instead of utilizing certain kinds of terrorists to pursue selfish goals. “President Vladimir Putin and many world leaders including US President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Turkish President Recep Erdogan, King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud have expressed their condolences to the Russian people. The Russian Government firmly believes that only by joint efforts the world community can defeat the evil of international terrorism. We appreciate profound condolences on tragic event in St. Petersburg expressed by many Guyanese as well as Diplomatic Corps representatives in Georgetown.
