Taijpaul Narine, 47, of Lot 202 Garnett Street, Newton, Georgetown, a former murder accused was
yesterday released on bail after he was charged with felonious wounding for allegedly beating a vagrant with a steel rod.
The unrepresented man appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and denied the charge which alleged that on January1, at Stabroek Market, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Sigbert Fraser.
According to Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore, the defendant was previously charged with the capital offence of murder in 2013 and was sentenced to prison.
However Narine told the court that he was sentenced to death by hanging and appealed the case and won. Narine went on to tell the court that he does odd jobs around the Stabroek Market.
The court heard that Narine lashed the virtual complainant who is said to be a vagrant several times about his body with a length of steel rod.
The Prosecutor further told the court that the injuries the virtual complainant received are potentially life threatening.
Narine was released on $15,000 bail and ordered to report to the officer in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department Brickdam, Police Station every day until the completion of the trial.
Narine will make his next court appearance on April 19.
