Medical reports have confirmed that a West Berbice father of three, died after ingesting an agro chemical.
Chaitram Mackhan, 51, of Plantation Ross, West Coast Berbice, is believed to have committed suicide as a result of domestic problems.
According to Mackhan’s sister, his wife of 13 years, moved out of the matrimonial home about two months ago taking with her their three children aged 13, 10 and seven, and her brother has been distraught since then.
The sister related that she decided to spend some time with her brother, and had been in the home with him for the past two weeks. She said that when she left home for church on Friday evening her brother seemed quite relaxed. She did not return to the home Friday night.
When she returned on Saturday morning she was quite shocked to discover her brother lying under the house near to a bottle which would have contained an agro chemical. From all appearance Mackhan was already dead when she arrived.
The body was subsequently removed to the mortuary, and post mortem was done on Wednesday April 5.
Chaitram is reported to have spent some time working in Antigua, and would have come home regularly to spend time with his family. However, when he came to Guyana in December last, he announced that he was not returning to Antigua. He took to gardening and operating his minibus to support his family. After his wife left the home, Mackhan became very troubled. He had someone operate the bus.
Relative and friends are reported to have tried to console Chaitram, as did a pastor.
Chaitram is survived by his mother, five sisters and one brother.
