Harinarine Lakhan was the watchman on duty at the sawmill the night, Berbice businessman, Shameer Ali Mursalin was allegedly murdered in his own front yard.
The sawmill is located next door to Mursalin’s home at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne.
Shameer Ali-Mursalin, called ‘Kazo,’ a trader, of Grant 1805 Weld Tank Dam, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, was fatally shot on October 24, 2015. Mursalin’s former business partner, Dennis Veersammy, called ‘Diggles ‘and two of his employees, Basheer Harrinauth and Delroy Fraser, are before the court for the murder.
They are facing a preliminary inquiry (PI) before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Magistrate’s Court at Springlands, East Berbice, Corentyne. The matter is presented by police Prosecutor Bernard Brown.
Yesterday, Lakhan told the court that he recalled hearing firecrackers that night. The witness said that he believed the sound was coming from Bar – be- cue at the sea dam.
He said that the following morning he learnt of the killing and gave a statement to the police.
“Da is all me know about the matter,” the man stated briefly.
Police Detective Inspector Suraj Singh underwent cross-examination in which he maintained that the police obtained written and oral statements from the three accused in the matter. Under questioning by Attorney Chandra Sohan, the witness reaffirmed that the men were cautioned before the statements were taken.
Inspector Singh further said the men made no request for their relatives, attorney or any other person to be present during the taking of the statement. He acknowledged however that they did tell investigators that they could not read or write.
The policeman had earlier testified to acquiring oral and written confession from the accused in the matter
The witness also faced questions from Harrinauth and Fraser. Both men are unrepresented by legal counsel. The two accused suggested that the witness has been lying to the court about the confession statements.
“Me neva give you no statement, Fraser repeatedly suggested. But the policeman constantly denied the suggestions. The detective is among the last witnesses to take the stand in the Pl. At least one more person will take the stand. The matter is scheduled to continue on April 13.
