Under the theme, “celebrating 41 years of partnership, supporting reform and development,” the Community Policing Organisation of Guyana (CPOG) commenced its anniversary with a church service at Tagore Secondary School.
The service was held last Sunday and it will conclude on May 27, with a women’s conference.
In reflecting on the work being done by the CPOG, the Ministry of Public Security said that it was established with the view of crime prevention at the community level. It later expanded to youth development, health consciousness, road safety and environment, along with other activities to benefit the community.
The membership of the CPOG currently consists of 166 groups with a membership of 4,347.
In 2016, the CPOG conducted 15,918 vehicular patrols, 5,729 motor cycle patrols; 1,521 bicycle patrols; 1,427 foot patrols; 857 boat patrols and 254 ATV patrols.
Additionally, the CPOG provided sports equipment for youth groups, sewing machines for Women’s Groups, conducted training programmes for Liaison Officers, Rural Constables and members of Community Policing Groups in sixteen (16) divisions.
They were able to make 89 arrests ranging from murders to domestic violence.
The CPOG was established in 1976 with the objective of harnessing the energies of willing members of communities in support of the work of the police, to achieve a crime-free society, and to be responsive to the needs of the communities in respect of the necessity to maintain law and order.
To fulfil its goal, members are exposed to training in policing, administration, domestic violence, trafficking in persons, conflict and anger management, interpersonal violence, fire safety, road safety, suicide awareness, communication, gender-based violence and noise nuisance.
