Today marks 100 days until the Aliann Pompey (AP) Invitational, and according to the United States-based Guyanese former national athlete, the key elements that made the inaugural meet last year a success will be present in the second edition, scheduled for July 15 at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
According to Pompey, those elements include: an international field of athletes, a comprehensive list of events, dedicated sponsors and a spectator friendly schedule of events. She informed that it is likely to have a few improvements as well.
“I am excited for this year’s edition of the AP Invitational. Last year I committed to making it an annual event and this will be a true test of the ability to do so. I am grateful for the sponsors that have already committed and finalised their contributions,” Pompey told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
“I am still working out the details with a few others, but I am confident that we’ll complete those shortly. It’s with great pleasure that we’ll be working with companies and organisations that will share the vision for sports,” she added.
The double Commonwealth Games medalist with a gold and silver in the 400m, believes that the meet is a great way to continue to bring international exposure to Guyana. She said that she got a bit emotional watching Kadecia Baird, Brenessa Thompson and Devaun Barrington and others at home last year.
According to Pompey, such competitions should be a norm since Guyana has a talented group of athletes. She said that all of the athletes who competed last year are interested in returning for the second edition of the meet in July.
“A lot of that was due to the amazing atmosphere the spectators created; the crowd was great and I hope even more people come out to support the event this year,” Pompey noted, indicating that the cost of general admission will remain the same ($1,000) and VIP admission will be $5,000.
Among the athletes she listed to compete are Eddie Lovett (USVI), Kenike Alexander (St. Vincent), Brycen Spratlin (USA), Ashley Kelly (BVI), Kadecia Baird, Brenessa Thompson, Winston George, Stephan James, Jermaine Griffith, Natrena Hooper, Natricia Hooper, Andrea Foster, Akeem Stewart, Andel Perry and Chantoba Bright.
The list of proposed events to be contested are: 100m (Premier event – men and women); 200 (men and women); 400m (premier event – men and women); 110m hurdles (men); 400m hurdles (men and women); 800m (men and women); 1500m (women); 3,000m (men); Triple Jump (men and women); High Jump (women); Shot Put (men); Long Jump (women).
Initial sponsors include Ministry of Education, IAAF, ConSudAtle, Guyana Olympic Association, Digicel, National Sports Commission, Banks DIH and Ramada Princess Hotel.
