A mid-morning fire has destroyed a house at Lot 182 Middle Road, East La Penitence Georgetown shortly after noon yesterday.
The old wooden structure was once the home of Colin Clarke and wife.
Clarke said that he was in the vicinity when the fire started. His wife, however, was not at home. He recalled noticing thick grey smoke emanating from the building at around 12:25hrs.
“I was on the road in the car, when I see the smoke. By the time I catch myself, the whole place in flames,” Clarke added.
He could not estimate the losses but noted that he is grateful that lives were spared.
“I am just grateful that no life was lost. I didn’t get to save anything, it (the fire) happened in a matter of minutes. Everything practically got burnt up in the fire,” he added.
The man also could not ascertain the origin of the fire.
“I didn’t leave any appliances on or nothing like that, so I can’t really say what caused it,” he explained.
While efforts to save Clarke’s property from the fire were unsuccessful, residents of Middle Road lauded the response of the Guyana Fire Service for containing the blaze.
“It could have spread and destroyed other houses next door. Nobody expects this kind of thing to happen on a quiet Sunday afternoon,” one woman stated.
When Kaieteur News visited the scene, the firefighters were working vigorously to contain the fire which was in full blaze. Those who converged at the scene helped to salvage items from another old wooden building located next door. The combined efforts with the assistance of the firefighters helped to stop the blaze from spreading to the other house on the land.
“At least, the Fire Service show up with water or else all them things (in the house next door) would have burned up. We just glad because sometimes the fire service does show up too late or without water. They come in time, this time around”
Meanwhile, the Fire Department has launched an investigation to determine the origin of the blaze.
