– placed in isolation for safety
It’s been just three days into his 10-year jail term, but prison officials have already had to isolate convicted child-rapist Alvin Rudder from other irate inmates who have a high intolerance for such offenders.
Rudder was struck in the head with a small bench while he was with other prisoners in an area of the Georgetown Prisons known as the ‘Wood Prison’ early yesterday. He sustained two large gashes that required several stitches but was not hospitalized.
A senior prison official confirmed that the attack appeared to have occurred because the inmates were incensed at Rudder’s sexual assault of a child. “Sometimes they retaliate against rapists; he was assaulted as a result of his (child rape) charge.”
The official revealed that Rudder has since been put in isolation “for his own safety.”
“The reality is that we don’t have enough cells to isolate him for long,” the official added.
So far, the attackers have not been identified and prison officials are conducting an investigation into the incident.
On Friday, Justice Navindra Singh sentenced Rudder to 10 years in jail for engaging in sexual activity with a child.
“I would like to know how they find me guilty on the first count …. Your honour, I never do it. I know nothing about it your honour,” Rudder, a resident of Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara, told the court after being sentenced.
He was initially charged with two counts of sexual activity with a child. However after deliberations, he was found not guilty of one count.
According to the allegation, the incidents took place on April 9, 2012 and between July 1 and 31, 2013, at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo.
According to the facts of the case, the accused took the underage girl to East Bank Essequibo on holiday when the first act was committed. He is said to have placed a rope around the child’s neck and threatened her. He told her that she should not tell anyone or else she would die. The second sexual act was committed in a clump of bushes.
He had continually denied the allegations throughout the trial.
The case was presented by Attorneys Siand Dhurjon and Tuanna Hardy. Rudder was unrepresented by legal counsel.
