Little ten year old Terry Jaikaran of Lot 22 Track ‘Z’ Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, drowned yesterday when he and another eight year old boy decided to have a swim in a canal not far from their home.
According to a police source the Jaikaran was in the company of his eight year friend and they were chasing goats in a pasture not far from the canal sometime between 07.00hrs and 08.00hrs yesterday.
They reportedly then decided to take a dip in the canal. Once at the canal Jaikaran dived in while the other boy watched.
The friend then saw Jaikaran struggling in the water, but could only watch helplessly, since he could not swim.
The lad then ran to Jaikaran’s home and alerted the boy’s father who hurried to the canal. By then, the child had disappeared from sight.
Speaking to Kaieteur News at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) yesterday, a distraught Chanderpaul Jaikaran said that he dived into the canal.
“When me plunge in, me dive down to the bottom a deh trench and I pull he up”. Mr. Jaikaran said he performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but that was to no avail.
Not wanting to accept that the smaller of his two children had passed, the man said he shook the little boy hoping that he would have responded but that too was futile.
The child’s father said that his son was a playful boy and he and the two friends would usually play in the nearby fields.
“I never thought he would a go and swim he never do that before.” Mr. Jaikaran said that his son was a poor swimmer, and even experienced swimmers would have had difficulty in the deep canal.
The boy’s father explained that his son was scheduled to attend church later in the day as he usually does on Sundays. The father said that Jaikaran Jr attended Enterprise Primary school and was a jovial typical fun loving ten year old.
