GCA’s Noble House Seafoods two day second division cricket final against Transport Sports Club (TSC) at Bourda yesterday with a half-century from Stephon Campbell and a six-wicket haul from Raffal Singh highlighting the first day action.
In hazy sunshine GNIC were asked to bat on a slow track and heavy outfield and led by Campbell’s 62, which included five fours, and an aggressive 31 decorated with a four and three sixes Marc Nicholson added 52 for the first wicket. Premchand Sookdeo (28) and former National U-19 batsman Ryan Shun (18) offered token support as GNIC slumped from 150-4 to 167 all out.
Singh dismantled the middle and lower order with an incisive spell of off-spin bowling to bag 6-29 for TSC, who were in a spot of bother when stumps were drawn at 68-6 despite a 26-run first wicket stand between Charwayne McPherson (16) and Rayn Hemraj (11).
But only Sunil Singh (11) of the other batsmen reached double figures as Deswin Butts (2-20) and Gajanand Suknanan (2-9) give GNIC the upper hand.
Earlier, the burly Nicholson lofted Kevin Ross, who opened the bowling with his off-spin, onto the roof of the Rohan Kanhai stand. The left-handed Campbell then survived a confident LBW shout off spinner Joshua Wilson who operated with a suspect action, played the supporting role as the 50-run stand was posted in the 14th over.
Campbell turned Ross forward of square for four and on-drove him for another boundary while Nicholson continued his big hitting before he was removed by Ross at 52-2.
Kurt Lovell (2) was then run out by a direct hit from short mid-wicket from Skipper Shawn Massiah as he wandered out of his crease two runs later.
Shun and Campbell carried the score to 87 before Shun, just when he was beginning to look threatening, was caught and bowled by Wilson. Campbell found a useful ally in Sookdeo but once Sookdeo was LBW to Singh at 134-4 the ‘Raffal Singh Show’ commenced as six wickets fell for just 17 runs.
But the GNIC bowlers were launching a determined fight back by the end of the day.
