… second allegedly committed while he was on bail for one
A man who was freed on a charge of murder during 2015 and was on bail on an attempted murder charge, has now been committed to stand trial in the next session of the Berbice High Court on another charge of attempted murder committed in 2016.
The first charge stemmed from an incident in 2015. This one arose from another incident last year.
The man, Bheem Evans, called “Lyo”, 55, of Woodley Park; West Coast Berbice, is well known to the authorities.
Evans is accused of attempting to murder Price Ramoo, 22, a cane cutter of Block 166 D Edwards, West Coast Berbice. The incident occurred on December 27, last at Black Wall Street, D Edward, West Coast Berbice.
According to Prosecutor Corporal Rochelle Evans, the two men are relatives. On the day in question Ramoo was standing on the corner when he and one Sean Paul got into a misunderstanding. Subsequently, Bheem Evans appeared on the scene armed with a yellow handle knife and began stabbing Ramoo.
Evans left the scene and returned with a cutlass. However, Ramoo managed to hide until the man left. Ramoo subsequently came out of his hiding place and collapsed. He was rushed to the Fort Wellington hospital and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was admitted.
The matter was reported and the man was arrested and charged.
Back in 2013, Evans was charged with killing Jaipaul Sampuran, alias ‘Jai’, at Number 11 Village, West Coast Berbice between June 28 and June 29.
That matter was dismissed in 2015 after Evans, a drug addict, pleaded that he acted in self defence. He had told investigators that he was at a wedding house when he was accused of stealing a bicycle by a man.
He and the man subsequently got into a fight during which he lashed the man three times. The man fell and he ran away to the backlands and hid. The police had found piece of wood with blood stains at the scene.
A post-mortem examination conducted on the man’s body revealed that he died from cerebral hemorrhage and fractures of the skull.
Justice Navendra Singh had admonished the accused and told him: you see how easy it was to get into problem? Avoid problems.
Evans definitely did not heed Justice Singh’s warning since the same year (November 2015) he was charged with attempting to murder Neil Kalamudeen at Woodley Park. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and committed to stand trial for the offence in July 2016 by Magistrate Rhondell Weever, at the end of a Preliminary Inquiry.
He was released on $200,000 bail. It was whilst on bail that he committed the latest act.
Prosecutor Corporal Rochelle Mars had urged the Magistrate to refuse bail since the man is a nuisance and would have posed a threat to other people. The result is that he committed the present offence while he was on bail for a similar offence.
The Prosecutor also recalled that the man was previously charged with murder, wounding and other offences.
He was refused bail and remanded to jail until the start of his High Court trial.
