The crème de la crème of the nation’s cyclists are expected to face starter’s orders come Sunday next when the 6th annual Baker’s Memorial Classic Day of Cycling comes off in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.
2016 Baker Memorial Cycle Road Race champion Geron Williams powering to the finish line followed by five other cyclists.
Last year’s winner, reigning National Road Race champion Geron Williams would be hard pressed to retain his crown given the form that has been shown by the younger brigade of riders led by Jamal John so far this season.
Add to this list the likes of Paul De Nobrega, Shaquel Agard, Briton John, Andrew Hicks and Hamza Eastman among others, Sunday’s race which has attractive cash prizes on offer, is anticipated to be a ding dong affair in the Linden Town and on the Linden Soesdyke Highway.
According to LBFCC President Okel Arthur, the race will pedal off outside the Baker’s residence at 08:00hrs proceed through the Town before entering the Linden Soesdyke Highway and proceeding to Moblissa Hill before returning to the starting line.
The senior and junior riders will repeat the race route four times before concluding what would be an 80-mile contest. Juveniles veterans under and over-50 will match pedals for two laps while the ladies will do so for one lap.
Andrew Hicks won the junior category last year, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay took the veterans segment, Ronaldo Narine was the juvenile winner with Byonka Barker was eth best female competitor.
The Baker’s family is the main sponsor but the LBFCC has informed that support has also been garnered from Sports Plus Store and the Guyana Sports Development Foundation.
