-Six new additional services to be offered
After being inconvenienced for over nine months, residents of Albouystown will be glad to hear that the Health centre – which was under construction – will be reopened to the public in two weeks.
The number of services is also set to increase. It was recently announced that the facility will be offering six new additional services.
The new services that will be provided to the persons in the area include chorionic disease clinic, daily outpatient service, daily dressing of wounds, minor suturing , daily VCT ( Voluntary counselling and testing for HIV) visual inspection of the cervix with acetic acid VIA and dental health( Proposed for once every quarter.)
The Ministry of Heath has signalled an intent to collaborate and to make more services offered; there will be a total of 9 workers.
In order for the new services to be possible, a few new instalments and medical personnel had to be put in place and that’s where the Ministry’s support will be invaluable.
“The Heath Centre is where I was treated and cared for as a young boy growing up in the community. It has been out of operation for a while now and so we welcome the opening and I know the residents of Constituency #10 and surrounding communities,’’ Malcolm Ferreira explained.
Due to the renovation of the clinic, the residents would normally gather at the Mosque on Independence Boulevard, Albouystown where they would receive the necessary care provided by members of the health centre.
In an interview with the Chief Health visitor, Berris Springer noted that the Albouystown Health Centre, when reopened will be better equipped with the necessary tools that will better aide in the way that care is delivered to persons in the community.
Berris further stated that the main reason for offering health care at the Mosque is to make health care accessible to the community and offer health services to the residents, rather that having to pay for or travel to access health care.
It has been observed that there has been a reduction in the attendance from the Albouystown community. Hence, they are aiming at reaching and providing the necessary help to defaulters and encouraging attendance.
According to the Chief Health visitor, the City Council has a mandate to provide the gamut of heath care services to the local communities. The Council focuses on preventative medicine which includes environmental health, health and environmental education, mental and child welfare and day care services.
These services fall under the portfolio of the Medical officer of the Health department which is synchronizing its resources to prevent the spread of disease in the city.
Some of the services currently offered to the persons include dental procedure, blood pressure testing, glucose monitoring ETC.
The team comprises two doctors and other administrative staff.
A medical practitioner for over 19 years, Doctor Bizuayehu Jeffrey stated that she mainly provides services at health centres and day care centres. Dr Jeffrey stated that she is overwhelmed with the turn out that they have been receiving and felt great working with the persons in the community because they were very receptive to the care that is being offered.
“One of the main aims is to do an assessment, see what the diagnosis is, plan the intervention with the patient, implement the course of action and at the end see the effectiveness of the evaluation.”
Some members of the team ventured out into the community and conducted door to door visits where they were able to meet with defaulting parents.
The Councillor of Constituency #10, Malcolm Ferreira plans to continue working with the M&CC public health department, Maternal and Child Welfare Section to ensure that every child is fully immunized.
