Dear Editor,
The recent action by an exasperated citizen to remove (by himself) a clamp illegally placed on his car wheel by employees of Smart City Solutions and agents of the City Council, shows clearly the level of frustration being encountered by citizens of our capital city and the feeling of vulnerability and lack of protection by the law enforcement agencies.
The decision by the Minister of Communities to finally seek the assistance of his colleague Minister of Public Security in getting the National Police to protect the citizens was most timely and prudent. Had this not been done, clearly more citizens would have decided to protect themselves from the brigands posing as parking maids as well, and from these unscrupulous operatives of the Council, even if it meant taking the law into their own hands.
It is important for the coalition to understand that they cannot sit on their hands and allow a band of mercenaries at City Hall better known as the ‘Fantastic Four’ to create conditions for anarchy, which will do nothing but erode the confidence persons have in their government.
The notorious parking meter scenario has proven to be a litmus test for the business community and civil society and should be taken as a lesson as it relates to foisting a crooked, offensive and regressive initiative on the people of Guyana. Never again should this be allowed to happen. The people of Guyana desires to see the continuation of democracy, economic freedom, respect for human rights, the provision of employment and a good life for all Guyanese.
The more things change at City Hall, the more they remain the same. Three Councillors from the previous City Council have returned to the new City Council and have formed the ‘Fantastic Four’ which is wreaking havoc. The Mayor continues to abuse and threaten Councillors of legal action to silence and intimidate them at Statutory Meetings in a most unsophisticated manner. And it does not end there, it is even more worrying, the caliber of officers who have been given senior administrative responsibilities many of whom are clearly incompetent, corrupt and unworldly.
This is not what the citizens voted for, and this is not what they deserve.
