The Police in B Division, Berbice under the command of Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam have been doing a lot to set the image of the force better and do things differently to enhance the work of the police in the division, especially in their community relationship. The efforts are part of the police social crime prevention programme in an effort to get persons, especially youths, involved in a positive live style.
Recently another youth and sports club was formed to compliment those that have been previously formed across the County.
The latest club was formed at the Felix Austin Police Training College at Adventure, Corentyne Berbice. This new club, known as the FAPC B Youth Group, caters for youths from villages such as Kildonan, Phillipi and Limlair areas.
According to Assistant Superintendent Antonio Fredericks, Officer in charge of the FAPTC, the initiative was taken to engage the youths and form them into a youth club because it was observed that the police weren’t really engaging the youth from the area. It was also observed that many of the youths in the respective villages have talent and needs guidance and with the FAPTC right nearby it was a good opportunity to make use of those talents.
It was observed that engaging the youths will help to build community relations. The youths range from ages 7-17 and an average 20 persons have joined so far.
Official meeting days are Saturdays at the FAPTC, Adventure beginning from 15:00 hrs.
According to Fredericks, the youths will be involved in a variety of activities that will help to tap their talent and enhance their skills including sports.
They will also have the opportunity to attend all classes being offered at the College.
At the latest session, according to Fredericks, the youth were spoken to on drugs, crime and education.
A number of sports gear and educational materials will be donated to the youths by the police including cricket, football volleyball and indoor games.
Officer in charge of the Police No 2 Sub Division Superintendent Kurleigh Simon and B Division Community Relation Officer Assistant Superintendent Keith Williams were among others instrumental in the formation of the group.
