General Services ensured that they make an attempt of retaining their 2015 title after disposing of Plant Operations 52-43 and now face Mines, who cruised past Plant Maintenance 43-32, when the semifinal stages of the BOSAI Minerals Group (Guyana) Inc Inter Department basketball championship was played last Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
Seeking to make a successful bid to win consecutive championships, General Services first gained a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and opened for a ten point lead at half time 30-20. They maintained the advantage as they finished the third quarter with a 41 -26 cushion before romping home winners 52-43. Leading their charge was Jamal Bethune who poured in 15 points as he got support from Domain Webster with 10, while Clive McCalman and Theodore Tappin each netted eight points. Quincy Datson had the tournament high 18 points, with Omisi Williams scoring 15 in a losing effort.
In the other game to determine the Services opponents, Mines came through with a clear cut 43-32 victory after a 15-11 advantage at the conclusion of the first quarter and even though the Operations were able to level the scores at half time 19-19.
But they failed to gain the upper hand as the Mines opened a ten point lead heading into the fourth quarter 33-26, before cruising to a 52-43 win. Marlon Pollydore was the lead scorer for Mines with 10 points as Marvin Russell scored nine with Carl Isaacs and Melroy Ross both netting six points.
Some novelty events are slated to precede the final after the third place game at 19.00hrs. That will include the female free throw shootout competition and the three point shootout involving the expatriate Chinese players and the local managers.
