Dear Editor,
It is with deep anger that I read your newspaper, ‘Dem boy seh’, on Tuesday poking fun at a promoter who was suppose to bring in the Indian comedian, Johnny Lever. Instead a lookalike came over the weekend. From all indications, while the show at Providence Stadium went ahead, the Berbice leg was cancelled.
Mr. Editor, as much as we dearly love ‘Dem boys seh’, the reality is that this is no laughing matter. There is the very real issue of deceptive ads and there are the issues of what was being told to the media houses. For the man in the street, the fact that a lookalike was coming was not made immediately clear to Guyanese.
Looking at a video of the airport arrival of Mr. Johnny Lever, which was quickly shared on social media, the promoters did not say anything that it was Mr Johnny Level’s fake or lookalike. There are thousands of Guyanese who watch Bollywood and are quite familiar with the genius of Johnny Lever. He is beloved. To promote something without making it clear that we are getting a lookalike or fake is highly deceptive and tantamount to fraud.
I have been receiving a lot of complaints about this issue. People want their money back. The promoter has said not a word. Surely this matter should attract the attention of the police. There are some opinions being offered that the advertising and promotion is tantamount to obtaining money by false pretense. It would be interesting to hear what our lawyers and the Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud, say on this. Maybe your well-read newspaper could raise this issue.
