A 47-year-old deportee was yesterday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he was remanded to prison for the murder of 28-year-old Levan Chanderpaul, whose bound body
was found in a sand pit at Corentyne, Berbice, on August 24, last.
It is alleged that between August 22 and August 24, 2016, Munilall Sarjou of Number 68 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, murdered Levan Chanderpaul. The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to him.
According to reports, Chanderpaul, who was suspected to be a pirate, was found in a backdam not far from his home. His body, which bore visible marks of violence, was discovered by a young man who was coming out of the backdam.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan instructed Munilall Sarjou to return to court on April 19, at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
Based on reports Sarjou is said to be a drug dealer and was deported from Canada in 2009 after slashing a woman’s neck. It is believed that Chanderpaul’s killing stemmed from a drug deal between the victim and Sarjou.
According to information, the accused gave Chanderpaul money to purchase drugs but the fisherman failed to do so, instead taking the money and leaving the village.
Chanderpaul returned some months after and the two men made contact and shortly after the fisherman’s battered body was found in a sandpit.
According to reports, when detectives approached Sarjou last year to question him about the murder, he fled, leaving his vehicle behind.
The vehicle has since been impounded at the Skeldon Police Station. Sarjou was later apprehended.
On December 22, last, Chanderpaul was one of five men remanded to prison on a charge of robbery under arms. The allegation was that he, Versammy Raawana, Vishal Gowkarran, Mohan David and Avendaedat Deodat, all of Corriverton, Corentyne, had attacked and robbed a fishing boat out at sea.
