A 31-year-old man appeared Wednesday before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh in the Springlands Magistrate’s Court to answer to charges of causing death by dangerous driving and failure to render assistance.
Tomeshwar Brijlall, of Number 64 Village, pleaded not guilty to the second charge (failure to render assistance) and was not required to plead to the other charge. He was unrepresented.
Prosecutor Bernard Brown asked that bail be refused based on the nature and gravity of the offence and the likelihood that Brijlall would not return to face trial. Bail was subsequently refused by the Magistrate. Brijlall’s driver’s licence was suspended. He is set to return to court on April 13th.
Brijlall also appeared in court on March 10, last, on a charge of driving under the influence.
Initial reports by this publication had stated that last Sunday, March 26, Irshad Mamood, a 20-year-old Welder attached to the Skeldon Estate, was riding along the #78 Public Road on his motorcycle bearing licence plate number CH 9545 when a silver-coloured Toyota Fielder wagon with licence plate number PNN 7736, and driven by Brijlall, attempted to turn into the #78 gas station located along the road.
Upon turning, he failed to acknowledge that Mamood was already attempting to ride past, in the process striking the young man. Mamood landed a few feet away from impact. His girlfriend, who witnesses the entire incident, had told this publication that she rushed over to her boyfriend’s assistance and took him to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Brijlall reportedly escaped after striking down the victim, but was caught and arrested the next day.
A post mortem examination revealed that Mamood died of a fractured skull and haemorrhaging. He was laid to rest yesterday.
