The Faculty of Education and Humanities proved that their challenge for the Champions’ Trophy at the Inter-Faculty Track & Field Championship of the University Of Guyana (UG) was not just talk, but action as the Faculty was able to walk the walk.
On completion of the meet last Friday at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora, Education and Humanities, with a total of 238 points, was ahead of the Faculty of Social Sciences on 218 points.
The University of Guyana Berbice Campus had 161 points and the Faculty of Technology 143 points to wrap up the final four places. The Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry amassed 100 points, Faculty of Earth & Environmental Sciences 79 points, Faculty of Natural Sciences 50 points and the Faculty of Health on 46 points to finish in that order.
The charge for the winners was led by the females, who won their segment of the competition with the men being third in their category. The Faculty of Technology won the male segment, but with no participation coming from the distaff side their overall position slipped to fourth.
Rayon Abrams of the Faculty of Technology was crowned the sprint king with wins in the 100m, 200m & 400m, while Kezia Bess of the Faculty of Education & Humanities was heralded sprint queen with wins in the 100m, 200m & 400m.
However, their performances were not enough to garner the Champion Athlete positions with the Champion Male Athlete being Osafa Dos Santos and Champion Female Fiona Mentis both of the Faculty of Education & Humanities.
Dos Santos earned 33 points with wins in the Discus, Shotput, second in the Javelin and fourth in the High Jump with Mentis being victorious in the Long Jump, High Jump and placing second in the 100m and 200m.
The salute of the March Past, which was accompanied by the Band from the Guyana Defence Force was taken by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Scott, the Registrar, Nigel Gravesande and representing the defending champions was Sydney Armstrong.
The Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry was adjudged the most uniformed Faculty on parade with the Faculty of Social Sciences having the largest contingent. The Best Banner on parade was awarded to both the Faculty of Earth & Environmental Sciences and Faculty of Social Sciences.
In declaring the sports open, Dr. Scott noted the historic significance of the event being hosted at the Stadium at Leonora and the opportunity it afforded the student-athletes to compete in the best of conditions.
