…guarantees training to work with ExxonMobil
With Guyana now diving fruitfully into the emerging Oil and Gas industry, at least one local company is forging ahead to improve its capacities to accommodate the new developments.
On Tuesday, Ceres Ground Structures Engineering Consultants announced a recently forged partnership with Fugro, one of the world’s leading experts in the studies and infrastructure involved in the exploration of oil and gas.
Charles Ceres, Managing Director of the local company stressed the importance of having local companies involved in the process to develop Guyana’s Oil and Gas sector.
“We are in the forefront of doing that. I think that this is the first time that we’ve had an international company and a local company partner to provide some level of local content to the development of the country’s oil and gas resources,” Ceres told Kaieteur News.
He explained that both Fugro and his company stand to benefit tremendously from the partnership.
“What we bring to the table, is local geotechnical expertise. Fugro is the world leader in offshore geotechnical engineering, and I would say that we are local leaders in onshore geotechnical engineering, so what we are, in fact doing, is, we are marrying the skill sets to ensure that we have the local content that is requisite for the development of the oil and gas sector in Guyana,” Ceres highlighted.
Fugro also stands to gain from the backing of Ceres Ground Structures Engineering, as it looks to build a comprehensive presence here in Guyana.
Brian Hottman, Business Development Director of Fugro even hinted at the setting up of a new partnership company.
In return, Hottman gave his entity’s commitment to providing comprehensive training to Guyanese working in the Oil and Gas sector.
He said that Fugro is fully cognizant of the fact that oil resources would be new to Guyana, and wants to help local companies improve their capabilities to provide services that would be needed in this area.
“We want to work with them (Guyanese engineers) and teach them about how things have worked in other parts of the world, so that they can see how things have progressed,” Hottman said.
The expertise that Fugro has, and the company’s ability to teach local professionals, is exactly what Ceres Ground Structures Engineering is looking to capitalize on.
“The reality is that as we develop the oil and gas sector in Guyana, we have to build local skills, and this is the avenue that we are going to use to build local skills,” Ceres said.
He explained that since the MoU was signed a few months ago, three persons from Ceres Ground Structures Engineering were afforded the opportunity to be extensively trained by Fugro.
“What we’ve done is that we’ve taken some of his local people, brought them to Houston, Texas and using our labs, we’ve trained them. They will go with us to work on a project for Exxon Mobil. This is expected to start in a few weeks,” Hottman interjected.
Ceres went further to explain that the trained personnel, who returned to Guyana only last Saturday, will most likely be deployed on the vessels, as part of this geotechnical investigation which commences in the not too distant future.
“The skill set that Fugro has, compliments our skill set,” Ceres added.
He noted too that other members of his staff are also gearing up to be trained in the United States.
“It allows us to expand on the possibilities and the range of services that we can now offer to Guyana in the oil and gas sector,” Ceres said.
