Dear Editor,
In this continuum of intransigence over our rightful border with Venezuela, it is necessary to state WE in GUYANA do not answer to the dictates of the Bolivarian Oligarchy in Venezuela. They are running a propaganda war machine against Guyana. There is no distinction between the Left and the Right in that country.
Together they represent no more than a small percent of their population. In the 1890’s when the United States went into Spanish America to free Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico from Spanish rule, the oligarchs lobbied for the US to invade (the then British Guiana) and give it to them.
It would be quite a step down for them when they do not prevail at the coming ICJ ruling to tell the thousands of homes where pictures and murals very large and small, feed their false pride.
The brainwashing on nightly TV chewing up our territory will come to an end. I wonder if there was no Essequibo River what their claim would look like. The answer to their wishes was the creation of the Paris Commission which settled the question in the 1899 Award which they agreed to and the next morning cried against it. In the 1960’s they found it necessary to raise the spectre of rising Communism around the world in Asia and Latin America. Communist parties in the newly born Guyana became easy prey for their propaganda forcing Prime Minister L.F.S Burnham to visit President L.B. Johnson (1967) to discuss this matter.
After all the talking back and forth for over 50 plus years, the end of 2017 will be the last era for these “talks”. The post International Court of Justice period will be most interesting.
Will Venezuela ease its belligerence or resort to more physical form of aggression against us? Personally, I feel they will absent themselves in contempt. In this scenario be prepared for the next chapter where anything goes. In their heyday of oil revenue with multiple years of earning “Marshal Plan” money, the oligarchy should turn their attention in seeking where their astronomical funds are hidden. The hungry masses will find contentment and cease to look for greener pastures in our territory.
We need to establish a Venezuela Discussion Group of keen individuals to dissect and study all aspects of their society and sectors. I pray for Morpheus to awaken them peacefully rather than for them to experience a rude awakening to world realities. Guyana will not be moved.
