Georgetown Representative Team and East Coast Demerara recorded victories when the U-17 inter association 50-over tournament commenced yesterday in Demerara.
The Georgetown side beat West Demerara at Everest. After Georgetown failed to field a team a side was formed with six available players from the city and some reserves from the other Associations. The match was reduced to 40 overs per side.
The Georgetown Representative team took first strike and were bowled out for 115 in 28.4 overs. Sachin Singh made 25, while Dwayne Dick contributed 20. Elian Whyte bagged 5-25 and Aftab Basir had 3-17.
West Demerara were bowled out for 62 in 29.2 overs in reply. Ashmead Nedd claimed 4-14 while Dwayne Dick and Qumar Torrington had 2-10 each.
At Enmore, East Coast took first strike and made 149-6 off their reduced 36 overs due to seepage on the pitch. Rajendra Singh top scored with 41 and Andrew Samaroo made 39. East Bank responded with 102-9. Andsuegga Rodrigues and Jamal Michael top scored with 17 each. Hemant Dindyal grabbed 4-15 and Samaroo 2-16.
Manager of East Bank team Rohan Sarjoo expressed his disappointment with the delay of the game which he said was caused by poor covers. He also informed that the water for the players were not available until after 11:00hrs.
The competition continues this weekend. On Saturday East Coast and West Demerara will battle at Ogle ground, while East Bank will take on Georgetown at Everest ground. On Sunday East Bank Demerara will clash with West Demerara at Ogle ground and Georgetown will go up against East Coast at Enmore ground.
