The Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) on Saturday last held their 17th annual awards and presentation ceremony for its top performers for the year 2016 at the Rainbow Bar, New Amsterdam.
Recipients pose with former Mayor and club Patron Errol Alphonso and founder and Coach Randolph Roberts after receiving their accolades.
During the ceremony the top cyclist, its sponsors and supporters were recognized and awarded. National juvenile champion Zaman Khan, who has been riding for one year, did enough to be crowned the top cyclist of the club.
Young and upcoming female rider Shenika Teixeira rode away with the top female cyclist award. Veteran rider Syborne Fernandes received the top award in that category with Wasim Hassnu the runner up. The top junior rider was Balram Narine, while Ralph Seenarine took the top Juvenile award.
The Bhowandin brothers Shivnarine and Mahesh were the top BMX riders of the club. Among those donating trophies were Assistant Commissioner r Ian Amsterdam, Payless Variety Store, Goosai and Goosai, Pompey Establishment, Former female champion Marica Dick and Health Director.
In attendance and making speeches were Club Patron and former Mayor Errol Alphonso, Commander Ian Amsterdam, Sports Enthusiast Eli Hazel and former National cycling champion Wilbert Benjamin.
They all congratulated the cyclists for their outstanding performance during the year. They also had words of praise and appreciation for founder and coach Randolph Roberts and the rest of the executives for the excellent work they have been doing over the years.
A call was made on the government to make more sports facilities available. An effort should be made to revitalize places like the Mental Hospital and Rose Hall Community Centre Grounds that could be used for training and competitions. It was observed that only the roads are being used now. Fear was expressed because the roads are becoming more dangerous every day.
The government and the business community were asked to support sports, which help to keep youths fit and off the streets. The government should make all sporting equipment tax free so that every youth in the country could be able to purchase equipment and gear to use it was noted. Among some of the top cyclists to emerge from the club over the years is Wazin Gaffor, who holds the national park lap record since 1992, Wilbert and Gary Benjamin, Peter Millington, Russell Allen, Rudolph Blair and female rider Rhonda Persaud among many others.
Roberts in his speech mentioned that the clubs was formed over 30 years ago. Cycling is a very expensive sport and over the years the club had a lot of challenges. However, despite the impediments the club has been holding its own while attracting new riders and withstanding the pressure.
Roberts had special words of appreciation and thanks for Wilbert Benjamin of Benjamin Business Establishment of Fyrish, Water Crest Hotel, Businessman Steve Edwards, A Ally and Sons, First Impression Hotel, Furniture World, Arokium Funeral Home, Guyana Bank of Trade and Industries, Courts, The Felix Family, Hand In hand, Persaud Funeral Establishment, Shaveh Business Entity, Former Mayor Errol Alphonso, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, Attorney at Law Mursalene Bacchus, Superintendent Boodnarne Persaud, Ming’s Optical, Assistant Superintendent Williams among others.
