A disciplined bowling performance led by Wazir Khan and a fine half century
from Charles Benjamin guided Good Success SC to a nine-wicket victory over Sans Souci SC when the final of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee (WCC) inaugural Farmers Cup T20 tournament was contested on Sunday at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground.
Sans Souci decision to bat on a moist pitch backfired when opener Devon Rambarran (00) was bowled off the first ball by Imran Khan, while medium pacer Wazir Khan removed Keron Kumar (01) leaving the score at 4-2. Wayne Osbourne (02) was then caught at cover off Wazir Khan before Cleon Venture (00) was bowled by the said bowler as Sans Souci slipped into further trouble.
Roopnarine Persaud and Tavin Budram attempted to resurrect the innings but after adding 20 for the fifth wicket, Budram tried to go over top and was bowled by Imran Khan for four. With his team in trouble, all-rounder Seon Venture attempted a big shot against David Chalitar but was bowled without scoring before off-spinner Nazeer Mohamed had Persaud who hit a four and a six lbw for 16. Reon Venture, who surprisingly batted late in the order and Omal Bacon halted the procession to and from the pavilion, but skipper Imran Khan rotated his bowlers well to prevent any cameo in the latter stages. Bacon was lbw to Gurnauth Khemraj for 17, while Venture who hit the last ball of the innings for six remained unbeaten on 29 as Sans Souci finished on 88-9.
Wazir Khan claimed 3-16, Imrah Khan 2-6 and Nazeer Mohamed 2-19 while there was one each of Chlitar and Khemraj.
Charles Benjamin and Ejaz Mohamed started cautiously against the new ball pair of Seon Venture and Osbourne before a change in the attack gave Sans Souci the breakthrough; Mohamed was bowled by Cleon Venture for four. But Benjamin stood firm and along with Vickram Ramnarine batted Good Success to safety. Benjamin struck Persaud for two sixes before driving Tavin Budram to the long off boundary, while Ramnarine took boundaries off Kleon Venture.
Benjamin hammered three fours and three sixes to remain unbeaten on 51, while Ramnarine who hit two fours and a six ended on 24 not out as Good Success finished on 91-1 in 15 overs. Benjamin was named man-of-the-match, while Cleon Venture took the best bowler prize with 10 wickets and Imran Khan the best batsman trophy with 160 runs including 134 against Zeelandia.
Secretary of the WCC Nazeer Mohamed congratulated the teams, more so Good Success. He expressed gratitude to the sponsors, adding they are looking forward to their continued support and also thanked Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.
