…to have two floating ramps and modern waiting area
By Brushell Blackman
Bartica will soon benefit from a new stelling that is currently under construction.
This construction will serve a community that sees thousands trekking through that community towards the interior that is awash with gold.
The structure is being built by Courtney Benn Contracting services to the value of $205M. It will see many modern facilities being installed to ensure that the structure is one that is befitting a town. The project is expected to be completed by year end even as work is ongoing.
According to Gordon Bradford, Region Seven Chairman, the new facility will see the construction of two floating ramps one for speedboats and another for ferries, this will alleviate the difficulty many persons experience when exiting vessels onto the stelling especially when the tide is low or extremely high.
Also, part of the edifice will be a modern air conditioned waiting area with seating accommodation to cater for in excess of 100 persons. There will also be an immigration outpost along with an area to house the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) in keeping with regulations to ensure that safety on the river is addressed.
Bradford said that the new stelling is part of the requirements of any town. He said that the town’s port of entry should be one of class. Further, he noted the new stelling comes at a time when the economy is heavily dependent
on the mining industry for its sustenance.
He also said that the new structure will ensure that the wrong message is not sent when one arrives at the stelling because often times the first thing an individual sees upon arriving at a new place is the impression they tend to have about the entire community.
The current stelling is in a state of disrepair. There are a number of un-used accommodations about the stelling. Bradford said that it is important that the structures are removed and are replaced with those that will serve in the continued development of a town that is developing rapidly.
Bradford explained that it was his agitation to the new government that ensured the new stelling is being built. He reflected that some time ago under the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) administration the town was not even considered for township status; but when this changed with the new administration’s assumption to office, many developmental works began in the community.
