An evening out with a partner turned deadly after a 20-year-old Skeldon Estate welder died following a road accident. A car driven by Jomeshwar Brijlall crashed into his motorcycle on the #78 Public Road.
Irshad Mahmood, of Number 77 Village was riding motorcycle CH 9545, which slammed into a silver-coloured Fielder wagon bearing license plate PNN 7736.
At Mahmood’s home, relatives and friends were in shock over the sudden death of the young man.
The young man’s mother Voilet Kanhai, 40, told this publication that she was at her mother’s home in the city when she received a call from her husband that their son had been involved in an accident.
“Me husband call meh and seh how he get accident and he going to the hospital. Then he call back and said that my son died and the driver get away.” According to the bereaved mother she returned home at around 1:00 AM the next day but did not see her son’s body.
Mahmood’s girlfriend, Reshma Ramdatt, 18, who was with him at the time, told this publication that they were having an “evening hang” at Sukpaul’s Gas Station located along the Number 78 Public road, Skeldon when he left her for a bit to meet with a friend.
“He go to the road end side and the car come fuh turn in the gas station and knock am. He pitch and he fall and start bleed from he nose.” She stated that after her boyfriend was hit the driver of the vehicle reportedly sped away.
Ramdatt said that she ran towards Mahmood and immediately made efforts to rush him to the Skeldon Public Hospital. After some time he was whisked away but unfortunately he was already dead.
He is said to have sustained internal injuries that resulted in his death. He was the eldest of two. The young man would have tied the knot on April 30, 2017 with his girlfriend of seven months (Ramdatt).
The driver of the Fielder wagon was intercepted in a car yesterday morning and is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
He has been identified as Jomeshwar Brijlall, 31, of Number 64 Village Upper Corentyne, Berbice. It is unclear whether he was under the influence but reports also revealed that he is the son of controversial CPG Laison Officer for the Upper Corentyne who was recently caught drinking and driving with the CPG vehicle. He was released on $20,000 station bail and not placed before the courts for the matter.
Mahmood’s body is presently at the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary.
