Within the past month, three male commercial sex workers have been brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for allegedly robbing men along South Road, Georgetown.
Akeem Pile, 24, of Lot 54 Victoria Road, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, and Gabriel Rowe, 25, of Lot 53 Fourth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown are accused of robbing Anthony Amos of $30, 000 in cash on March 25, last, at South Road, Georgetown. And at the time of, immediately before or after the robbery they made use of personal violence towards Anthony Amos.
They pleaded not guilty to the charge and were ordered to post bail in the sum of $100,000 each by City Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told the court that on the day in question around 01:30hrs, Amos was in a motorcar proceeding along King Street.
Prosecutor Gonsalves said that the vehicle stopped at the intersection of South Road and King Street during which the defendants entered the motorcar and attacked Amos.
According to the prosecutor, upon seeing the commotion the driver of the motorcar drove to the Brickdam Police Station where the matter was reported.
Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat during a petition for bail told the court that his clients are commercial sex workers. According to Attorney Fung-A-Fat the defendants did not rob Amos. He explained, “They (the defendants) were called to perform a club sandwich and the virtual complainant was too drunk to perform the act.”
He said that remanding his clients to jail would be inhumane because they would be raped repeatedly by the prison population. But Prosecutor Gonsalves opposed bail for them citing the serious nature and prevalence of the offence. He also said that there is a likelihood the commercial sex workers may not return to court if granted pre trial liberty.
He also highlighted that violence was used during the commission of the offence.
Earlier this month, commercial sex worker William Samuels was released on $25,000 bail for also robbing a man on South Road.
Samuels, 23, of Lot 91 Enmore North, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on March 5, he robbed Sherwin Jackson of a wrist watch valued $250,000, an LG cell phone and $7, 000 cash, and immediately before, during or after the robbery made use of personal violence towards Samuels.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore had told the court that Samuels and other sex workers in the area attacked and robbed Jackson, while he was traversing the area on a bicycle.
However, Samuels claimed the virtual complainant, who he described as a “regular fair picker” would frequently visit the area and request to have sex with him and his friends.
“He (Jackson) come to do business with me. He wanted to have oral and anal sex with me. He come with $500,” Samuels stated. The sex worker said that he and his friends did not rob the man. He stated that a group of men who were in the area carried out the robbery in full view of him and other sex workers.
