A businessman was yesterday sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and fined $115M at the conclusion of the trial which was held before Magistrate Krystal Lambert at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Courts.
Balkissoon Ramdass, called “Johnny’’, 54, of West Coast Demerara was found guilty of having in his possession 76.910 kg cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Three women who were jointly charged with Ramdass – Sheleza Khan, 34, the former wife of self confessed drug trafficker Barry Dataram, of Versailles, West Bank Demerara; Felicia Laundry, 28, of Evergreen Street, New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara; and Ramdass’s reputed wife, Andrea Puran – had the charges against them dismissed.
The matter was prosecuted by Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford, who relied on the fact that two of Ramdass’s workers testified against him outlining the details of the narcotics enterprise, and that Ramdass had videotaped their conduct along with himself in his West Bank Demerara Aracari’s gated community home, successfully utilised his own DVR device to illustrate Ramdass’s participation in the enterprise.
It is alleged that between June 7 and June 9, at Almond Avenue, Roraima Housing Scheme; West Coast Demerara, Ramdass had the cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to information Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks acting on a tip-off went to a premise located in the Roraima Housing Scheme and conducted a search. The illicit drug was seized and the accused was arrested.
Information received was that the marijuana, which was being compressed during the seizure, was being prepared to be shipped out of the country.
