of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition on Sunday night, at the New Amsterdam Stelling Road in Berbice.
Played before one of the largest crowd to witness the competition since its birth in 2015, New Amsterdam (NA) Kings replaced former champs Young Strikers as the new rulers of the street format in the Ancient County after squeezing past East Bank Gunners 1-0 to claim the top prize of $400,000 and the championship trophy.
Following contrasting semi-final win, the final showdown begun in action fashion as both teams looked tentative going forward with a few counterattacking attempts nullified from just over the halfway line.
As the players begun to settle down and the bit of early nervousness slowing dissipating the tempo picked up and both teams delivered shots at goal, but they sailed harmlessly wide of the uprights.
However, two minutes before the interval, DeSantos cut off a pass from the left flank, weaved inside, before burying his effort into the back of the goal to send their supporters into rapturous celebrations.
The Gunners were kept at bay by the strong tackling Kings and went to the break trailing 1-0 with all to play for in the final period.
The resumption started at a quicker pace, but errant shooting combined with an absence of buildups kept the Kings slightly ahead.
As time winded down and supporters from both camps urging the players to create more attacking options the game picked up significantly, but the Kings continued to defend stoutly, while offering few attacking excursions.
Part of the action in the final that featured New Amsterdam Kings and East Bank Gunners on Sunday in Berbice.
In one sequence, the Gunners won no less than three corners on the trot, but the Kings defence held firmly until the final whistle sounded to hand them victory.
The Gunners went home $150,000 richer along with a trophy.
Earlier, in the playoff for third place, Outsiders beat Mahaicony 2-0 with Roger October registering a second half double in the 21st and 23rd minutes.
They claimed $100,000 and the third place trophy, while Mahaicony went away with $75,000 and a trophy as well.
In semi-final action, NA Kings edged Outsiders 1-0. DeSantos found the back of the net in the 22nd minute, while East Bank Gunners cruised past Mahaicony 3-0.
Joseph Giddings, Ronaldo August and Andrew McCalman netted in the first, fifth and 23rd minutes respectively.
The other sponsor on board was Colours Boutique.
