Dear Editor,
I recall with great glee and satisfaction, the initiative taken by the late President Forbes Burnham to make Guyana a country where all religious and other groups can have a sense of ownership and by extension, a knowledge and understanding of our history. He moved us from a time when our National Holidays were based on the Anglo-Saxon calendar and Christian holidays. Thanks to him, we now enjoy and share Islamic and Hindu holidays.
After all these years, any individual should make him or herself knowledgeable of the significance of the various major religious festivals. So when a high government official refers to Phagwah as the Festival of Lights, it is unpardonable and unacceptable.
It is this same government official who organized a lack luster cultural presentation ignoring our greats, such as; Rudy Bishop Steel Band, Roy Geddy’s Steel Band and Eddy Grant. But then, there was a state dinner with cheap paper plates and cutlery, food without warmers and a one man band used by simple folks who just cannot afford to do better. This same official mucked up seating arrangements at our Flag Raising cerrmony and was heard to mutter that senior ministerial posts means nothing to her.
I hope President Granger who we all love and respect acts like the old generals when his subordinates mess up – not once or twice. They ought to be sent packing. Of course, in the old days, high officials who have demonstrated ineptness, craftiness or carelessness would have on their own demitted office. We can do better for the sake of Guyana and let persons with experience and a passion for perfection run the show.
