…as probe continues
The Assistant Superintendant of Police (ASP) who was fingered in the smuggling of an AK-47 assault rifle out of the Tactical Service Unit (TSU) has been transferred to another branch of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) as the probe continues.
This was confirmed by Acting Commissioner of Police David Ramnarine.
Ramnarine disclosed, “That file is still receiving advice. While initial advice was given and the subordinate officer was charged and placed before the court, the complete advice has not yet been given to us. The file was returned with some points for us to clear up, which we are in the process of doing. That will tell us when we have the final advice what is the extent of the involvement of the other ranks.”
So far, Police Corporal, Shavon Marks, was charged with having an AK 47 rifle in his possession, along with 40 live rounds, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence on February 28, last.
Corporal Marks of Rosehall, Corentyne, Berbice was placed before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on March 14 and remanded to prison.
Based on reports, ranks from the Major Crimes Investigation Unit arrested Corporal Marks and a civilian following the gun find. The motor vehicle was also impounded at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown.
Based on information received, Corporal Marks, who worked on the evening of February 28, reportedly collected the weapon and placed it in the vehicle. It is alleged that the following morning a civilian entered the TSU compound and attempted to drive the car out of the yard. Reports indicate that the individual was stopped by security guards which resulted in the vehicle being searched.
