Manx Powers has been found not guilty of killing former boxing champion, Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis in an accident which occurred in May 2015.
Lewis became famous when he fought for a world title and became the first Guyanese to capture the WBC Welterweight title in 2001.
The decision was handed down yesterday by Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Powers, 33, a pork knocker, of Lot 102 Campbellville, Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was accused of driving motor car PNN 596 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Lewis on May 7, 2015 at New Hope, East Bank Demerara.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford has however given oral notice in court of his intentions of appealing the decision.
According to reports, Lewis, 44, of Hutsonville, New Hope, East Bank Demerara was riding his bicycle, when he lost control and drove into the path of the car. He was rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital, where he succumbed.
During her ruling, Magistrate Azore told the court that an eyewitness to the accident testified that Lewis rode past him and he later observed a collision. According to Magistrate Azore, the eyewitness said that he saw Lewis attempting to cross the road without looking at ongoing traffic.
Magistrate Azore said that after reviewing the evidence it was found that Lewis swung across the road and was hit by the motor car being driven by Powers, who swerved but failed to avoid the collision.
Powers told reporters that he felt good after the trial concluded.
He had been released on $250,000 bail pending trial.
After learning of the decision, Lewis’s daughter stepped out the courtroom and sat on a bench where she wept uncontrollably.
