Two brothers were on Thursday fined $100,000 each with an alternative of serving eight weeks’ imprisonment for the possession of two forged Italian passport.
The men Arshad Mehood Mughal, 40, and Ahsan Riaz Mughal, 23, both appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where they both pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to them.
The charge read that on March 21, last, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, Arshad Mughal and Ahsan Riaz Mughal uttered to Collin Lovell, a fly Jamaica Airline representative, two Republic of Italy passports in the name of Arshad and Ahsan bearing their photographs to show that these were issued by the Government of Italy, knowing same to be forged.
Arshad told the court that he was very guilty of the charge and begged for forgiveness. He further stated that he has refugee status in Brazil and wanted to go back.
While his brother told the court he left Pakistan when he was 11-years-old for a better life. He further stated that he has refugee status in Brazil and wanted to go back.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore stated that the defendants came from Brazil into Guyana via Lethem using their Italy passports and were granted one month stay in Guyana. The prosecutor further stated that the passports were reported loss or stolen.
Moore said that checks were made with INTERPOL which revealed that the passports belong to Marian Cele, who was born on May 28, 1970 in Barletta Rome. The brothers told the court that they bought the passport in Dubai for $US9,000 each.
The Chief Magistrate then ordered that the passports be confiscated and that the duo be escorted to the nearest port of exit upon payment of the fine or serving the default prison term.
