Dear Sports Editor,
Thanks for giving me some space in your Newspaper, there are many reasons why I am thankful for the space. First let me start by saying I am not happy with the selection of the Guyana Carifta Games Team. As I read the Sports news all I could have done is shake my head. Leading up to the much anticipated Carifta trials I was submitting a few names to the Association along with (FAT), websites and links to the names I suggested. While I would in no way want to have any influence with the team selection I am still wondering why we continue to send such a small team when we have local and foreign athletes to select from.
At present Yesenia Andrews is kicking up a storm here in New York and to see her being left out of the squad, one has to wonder what are the selector’s motives. As we know that two weeks ago, this 13year old ran an aprox. 22.9 split on the last leg of her club Metro Eagle, to give her team victory in the 4×2 13-14 girls relay and since I am alive I have never heard or read muchless seen that happened before. It is still is the most talked about feat around the track here in New York City and the Director of the PSAL (PUBLIC SCHOOL ATHLETIC LEAGUE) of New York is looking to feature her as a person to look for in that league.
Do you think that leaving her out of the Guyana Carifta Team is justified because she ran a 24.71 sec for the 200m indoor putting her No.2 spot for New York, while the Qualifying Standard was set at 24.50 in Guyana.
Let me explain a 24.71 indoor is equivalent to approx.24.2 which is way below the asking mark and I can explain more but all who knows about indoors would know that in a 200m you have two turns compare to an outdoor 200m which have one turn and an 80m stretch to the finish line, while in the indoor you only have a 20m stretch before entering the turn, so taking that into account what would be her time be; my guess 23.7 sec and maybe more. Again, is it a wise decision to leave this young lady out who can also be a good asset to a 4×1 relay team. It leaves the question, are we going to continue making the same mistake over and over?
I am also wondering why Bryann Sandy for the high hurdles, both 400m and 100m was not considered also Kiara Birch in the girls shot putt doing 11.36m leave me to wonder how the selection process was done.
In my head I am thinking that we should be sending more athletes to every games so that we can mix the overseas based athletes with the local athletes. I am not knocking the AAG but what good is it to have every week or every meet the same set of athlete competing against each other whole year round, why not mix the athletes, get them more overseas competition, let them mix so that they can better themselves.
I am hoping the relevant Authorities can amend the list and include a few more athletes and give Guyana a chance at these games. Also when are we in Guyana going to include the overseas athletes in more dialogs because they need it and they need it now not next week or tomorrow because as we can see we have a large crop of Guyanese Athletes doing well and we are not tapped into our resources. Mind you, we may end up like the West Indies team slipping further and further to the bottom of the list and that Olympic medal will continue to elude us.
