Alex Anthony Feidtkou, 23 and Leon Alleyne, 21, both of Essequibo were yesterday granted $ 100,000 bail each by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on a simple larceny charge.
The charge read that on March 20, last, at Waini Backdam, Essequibo, they stole 73 pennyweights of gold valued at $803,000 from their employer, Zaheer Khan. The unrepresented men pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones had no objection to bail being granted to the defendants. He told the court that the item was recovered in the defendants’ possession.
Jones further stated that police acting on information stopped the defendants at Supenaam, Essequibo and when a search was conducted on them, the gold was found.
Jones added that when the discovery was made, the men could not give an account of where they got the item from. This, he said, raised suspicions.
Subsequently the men were arrested and charged for the offence.
The duo will make their next court appearance on April 4 at the Acquero Magistrate’s Court.
