-No doctor at Orealla
The community of Baracara, Canje, will soon have a spanking new community centre and a playground.
According to Region Six Chairman, David Armogan, the project has already been awarded by the Ministry of Communities. “Some contractor from Georgetown has been awarded that work, but it hasn’t started as yet,” Armogan said.
The region has already begun constructing a building to house the head teacher and teachers for the community of Baracara, “The region is building a head teacher’s house; we are having difficulties to get a head teacher into Baracara because if you don’t provide proper housing you won’t get anybody to go”.
According to the Chairman, the project is estimated to cost $12M. “Once you put a good house in there, I think you would get teachers from out here to go” According to the Chairman, the project will see its commencement after complaints were made from residents of Baracara about not having adequate amount of teachers in the area. “That is going to be completed this year”, he said.
He also noted that some revetment work has begun, “What we are trying to do is utilize as much as possible local labour. A lot of these contractors have been told recently when we had a workshop, to engage as much as possible workforce from the area in which work is being done”.
Armogan also underscored that there will be more employment opportunities in different areas.
“They were also encouraged to use materials that are being produced in Baracara like the wood that has to be used on the buildings, so that the loggers will have an opportunity to make a few dollars”.
However, Armogan noted that Orealla is in dire need of a doctor in the area. He stated that he was told at several Regional Democratic Council meetings that a doctor will be placed in the area.
However, nothing like that has been done as yet, he pointed out. “This is why I’m very disappointed in the way things are running in the health sector because they did identify a doctor to go to Orealla, but they are saying that the housing facilities for the doctor there is not up to standard and the doctor is refusing to go.”
“Last year they said the doctor would have gone in there. You have almost expired three months of the year already and it’s not being fixed. I don’t understand what’s going on there”.
Armogan called on the region’s health officials, “to get their act together”.
He also noted that there is a nurse and a community health worker who have been treating residents. “We need someone competent to go in there.”
He stated that a structure is also being built on the wharf, so in the event that residents are not able to sell out their produce, they can store it on the wharf and return home without any worries. This is opposed to what they have been doing for years, that is selling their produce at a lower rate. Armogan pointed out that the project has about a month to completion.
