Three men were awarded monetary prizes for topping a recently concluded logo and tagline
competition hosted by the Office of Climate Change (OCC), Ministry of the Presidency in collaboration with the E.R Burrowes School of Arts.
Dillon Craig copped first place and was awarded $150,000 for his efforts; Hercelle Pellew placed second and won himself $75,000, while Ransford Simon placed third and was awarded $50,000. They were presented with their prizes during a simple ceremony held yesterday at the E.R Burrowes School of Arts.
Present at the event were Administrator of the Art School, Ivor Thom; Director of Studies at the Art School, Genell Hamilton; Head of the Office of Climate Change, Janelle Christie; Communication Specialist, Office of Climate Change, Yasmin Bowman and Safiya Gafoor, a representative from the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN).
The competition aimed at benefiting both the students of the Burrowes School of Arts and the OCC by extension. Apart from the financial benefits the winners will be mentioned on the OCC’s website as contributors to the logo design and tag line. Additionally, all entrants will have their submissions showcased to local and international audiences on the website.
It was revealed that the logos will benefit the OCC from publicity, since an organization’s logo and tagline give it an easily recognized visual symbol. This will allow the OCC to put its logo on promotional materials and event products as a stand-alone representation.
During his remarks, Thom said that it was very significant that the OCC recognizes the importance of art in Guyana. Acknowledging that the students faced challenges, Thom stated that they were still able to produce excellent pieces. The administrator pointed out that he cannot imagine anything without art, although some persons might see it as an alternative.

“Many times people come to the Burrowes School of Arts as an alternative for failing secondary and primary education. We are hoping that other groups, ministries and private sector can also get involved and we are willing to participate not only for the upliftment of the school but for the upliftment of art in Guyana.”
Meanwhile, Craig explained that he used various signs and symbols to create his logo. He said that he opted to enter the competition because he wanted to bring awareness to climate change. The winner revealed that he took about two hours to design the logo.
The Officer of Climate Change was established in 2009, under the then Officer of the President. It is to coordinate the preparation of Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS); facilitate the consultative process for its revision and finalization; and implementation of the on-going stakeholders engagement, communication and outreach. The OCC also served as the secretariat of the Multi-Stakeholder Steering Committee, which formed part of oversight mechanism to the Guyana-Norway Agreement.
The OCC serves as the focal point for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is responsible for ensuring that the government fulfills its obligations as a party to the convention and its protocol. The OCC also plays a leading role in the engagement and dialogue with multilateral agencies on behalf of the government, to establish partnership and facilitate access to technical and financial support for low carbon initiatives and climate change mitigation and adaption, in furtherance of national development thrust.
The Office of Climate Change is in the very early stages of establishing a communication department which will have responsibility for the preparation and implementation of a national communications strategy and plan for public education, awareness and outreach of Guyana’s climate vulnerability; and the policies and actions being implemented by the government for climate change adaption and mitigation for increased community resilience.
