Berbice teams have expressed interest in participating in this weekend’s Bel Air Lions / Supligen Domino Competition which is being organised to raise funds for much needed community projects.
The interest of teams from Berbice was confirmed by Lion Orlando James, who is also a member of the Organising Committee with responsibility for the staging of the two-day tournament set for tomorrow and Sunday, at the Bel Air Lions Den, Enachu Street, Section ‘N’ Campbellville.
James recently confirmed that early indications reveal that the original target of thirty-two teams will be easily surpassed and this he added will make the event bigger than the inaugural tournament.
James, who spoke via telephone with Kaieteur Sport on Wednesday, said the Georgetown Domino Association (GDA), the entity responsible for the whole organisation of the tournament, is projecting a much larger turnout of teams with communities such as, Berbice, Linden and Wakenaam joining their counterparts from all over Demerara to battle for supremacy and at the same time support a worthy cause.
Already, main sponsor Supligen had announced its intention to offer as incentive twelve (12) packets of Supligen for teams registering early and the Organisers decided to push back the deadline for registration to today.
Defending champion Sheriff Street Saga Boys said they are confident that they will retain the title won at the inaugural tournament and has picked a strong side to ensure that the trophy remains with them.
James added that teams are eager to participate since the proceeds will go towards community projects that are geared to benefit the lesser fortunate within the society. Among the teams invited to participate are: Killers, Upper Level, Sherriff Street Saga Boys, Masters, Scramblers, Ray’s One Stop, All Seasons, GGMC, Thunder, Strikers, F&H Supremes, Impressers, Frankie’s, Lions A, Spartans, Lions B, Transport, Freddie’s 6, Police and NIS.
Over $500,000 in total prize monies is up for grabs in the two-day tournament which will be played, at the Bel Air Lions Den in Section ‘K’, Campbellville. The winning team will receive $250,000, 2nd place $150,000 and 3rd place $100,000 along with trophies.
Entrance fee is $12,000 per team and the Most Valuable Player will receive $10,000 and a case of Supligen.
