In another display of goodwill, Edward B. Beharry & Companies positively responded to a request made by the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) after presenting a cheque for an undisclosed sum to Captain of the Sevens team Ryan Gonsalves for their preparations to participate in the upcoming prestigious HSBC Hong Kong 7s which kicks off on April 7.
Following up on support given to the team for their NACRA campaign which saw them clinch their eight title last year in Trinidad and Tobago, the Company’s Brand Manager Monique Tiwari in her brief remarks, disclosed that the sponsorship represents support for the team’s expenses while in North America where they will intensify preparations for the Hong Kong Sevens.
Tiwari, who handed over the cheque to Captain Ryan Gonsalves said, “We are pleased to support this team once again and we wish them success in Hong Kong.”
Union President Peter Green in response thanked the Company for its continued commitment to the national outfit and challenged the government to provide similar or even better funding than that of the private entities.
Gonsalves shortly after extending thanks to the Company said the team will use the time in the USA to “get up to game speed” since the pace of the game in Hong Kong will be “much faster than what we are accustomed to in the Caribbean.”
Coach, Kenneth Grant-Stuart, who was also present at the occasion, echoed similar sentiments expressed by Gonsalves, adding that they will utilise the time to have a good look at the players and work on their strengths and weaknesses.
Guyana is placed in Pool G along with Spain, Papua New Guinea, and Uruguay in the Hong Kong Sevens.
The Guyana squad is: Ryan Gonsalves (Captain), Rupert Giles, Vallon Adams, Richard Staglon, Rondell McArthur, Rickford Cummings, Peabo Hamilton, Claudius Butts, Patrick King, Avery Corbin, Ronald Mayers, Dwayne Schroeder and Blaise Bailey along with officials Kenneth Grant-Stuart (Coach), Robin Roberts (Manager) and Physiotherapist, Barrington Browne.
The team leaves on Sunday.
