The early commotion regarding who will survive the knockout phase has been settled and teams are no longer in an immediate do or die situation, but now have three throws at the dice to make it to the stage that matters, the
money stage.
Tonight is the start of the round robin phase, following the completion of the knockout segment which concluded last Friday, at the National Gymnasium.
In what is anticipated to provide exciting action for fans, defending champion Bent Street with the likes of Colin Nelson, Konata Manning, O’kenie Fraser, Kelsey Benjamin and Sheldon Profitt in their line-up face a rampant Broad Street Bullies in a colossal matchup.
The Bullies have looked in ripping form and the Gravesande siblings Jimmy and Rocky along with Keiron Solomon and Lennox Cort are certainly not intimidated by the strong appearance Bent Street seems to have on paper and will look to play attacking football in search of a win.
In another matchup that will be closely watched, inaugural tournament losing finalist Sparta Boss go up against the up-started Agricola Champion Boys and while no one is predicting the former will win in a canter, they are expected to secure full points.
Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson and Devon ‘The Tormentor’ Millington are back in the fold and when you add names such as Sheldon Shepherd, Denis Edwards and Solomon Austin to this unit then you can understand why they are highly favoured to win.
Domini Garnett and Quacy Weekes led them to a solid come from behind victory against North Ruimveldt in their opening game so they should be feeling an air of confidence coming into this fixture, but could find it to be a ‘bridge too far’ to cross.
Whenever West Front Road and counterparts West Back Road clash there is always the element of bragging rights at stake and the encounter is usually a fierce one so don’t expect any change to that scenario.
West Front Road emphatically dispatched crowd favourites Camp Street All Stars in their previous encounter and has already shown that they’re in high gear so all opposing teams better take note.
Carl Tudor and Roy Cassou looked deadly on the counter-attack, while the supporting cast of Randolph Wagner, Andre Webber, Jamal and Hubert Pedro can be just as destructive on offence.
West Front Road is not as talented on offence, but has already shown that they could defend a lead so it would be in their best interest to score first and this will be the task of Josiah Charles.
All the matches promise explosive action.
Winner of the tournament will receive $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the runner-up takes home $200,000 and a trophy.
The third and fourth place finishers walk away with $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
The event is slated to conclude on April 15th.
