The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has confirmed eight teams for the Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships that will be hosted here, April 13-18 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
Those teams are Barbados, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Jamaica, St. Vincent, Suriname and French Guiana. Guyana will also play in the tournament scheduled for the Easter Weekend.
“The competition will be used as the qualification event for the 2nd Pan American Junior and Cadet Championships scheduled for the United States in September,” a GTTA press release said. The top four teams from the Caribbean will join four from Central America and four teams from South America at the Pan American competition.
The Cadet and Junior Championship engages players aged 15 years and under and 18 years and under. The tournament will provide the opportunity for 32 of Guyana’s top junior players to play against the region’s best for regional honours.
“The GTTA has already shortlisted the squad to be announced in view of starting preparations.
Last year, Guyana’s junior team secured a silver medal in a three-way tie between the host and winners, Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago,” the release continued.
“The local players will be looking to use their home advantage to put in a more outstanding performance in view of securing qualification for the prestigious Pan American Championships,” it added.
The junior boys’ team provides a very formidable line up to covet the junior boys’ team title with the likes of Miguel Wong, Elishaba Johnson and Kyle Edghill.
Nicholas Romain will lead Guyana’s challenge in the 18 years and under Boys division; Tyriq Saunders, Terrence Rausche, Yeudistr Persuad, Kaysan Ninvalle, Brandon Jaikarran, Navindra Persaud, Jeremey Singh, Isaiah Layne, Niron Bissu, Khalil Ninvalle and Jonathan Van Lange will form part of the 18 years and under team.
On the girls side Priscillia Greaves will lead Guyana’s challenge in the girls 18 years and under competition. She will form alliance with young Neveah Clarkston, Salenas Jackman, Jamali Homer, Abigale Martin, Onieka Philips, Davona Bess, Thuraia Thomas and Christie Lopes among others.
The categories to be contested are: Boys – Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles and Girls – Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles in the respective age groups.
