Fresh off winning the STAG Elite League (SEL), League Leaders tournament, the Guyana Defence Force continued their winning ways when the second half of Season Two play kicked off yesterday at the GDF ground, Camp Ayangana.
Continuing their compact and patient style of play, the rampant GDF took 23 minutes to get down to business against the East Demerara based Kings. Taking center stage was the dependable Olvis Mitchell who hammered home a double as the Army side went into the half time break comfortably ahead, 3-0.
Delroy Fraser opened proceedings in the 23rd minute; the advantage was doubled when Captain Kelvin Sullivan fired into the roof of the nets in the 38th minute. Three minutes later, Mitchell scored the first of his double.
The Kings looked a potent opponent during the early exchanges and even created some openings early on which kept the home team at bay but as the match matured, the Army slowly wrested the initiative from their challengers whilst imposing their will.
In the second half, the Kings were able to keep the winners of the first half of the league at bay and only allowed in one goal which came off the boot of Mitchell in the 60th minute as they attacked the western goal.
Despite losing Jerome Richardson as a result of being booked twice in the 83rd and 85th minute, the Soldiers came out easy winners as they set sights on repeating their first half performance by winning the League outright.
Providing they can repeat as winners, they will earn the 1st Prize worth Six Million Dollars ($6,000,000) with the 2nd Prize valued Three Million Dollars ($3,000,000); 3rd – Two Million Dollars ($2,000,000) and 4th Prize – One Million Dollars ($1,000,000).
In yesterday’s supporting match which kicked off at 16:00hrs Linden’s Topp XX kept Fruta Conquerors at bay for 65 minutes before they finally broke down at the back which allowed the Tucville based side to walk away 3-0 winners.
Eon Alleyne broke the deadlock in the 65th minute which second half substitute, elder statesman Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, who was introduced in the 63rd minute, doubled the advantage on 77 minutes with a well taken first time shot. Reshawn Sandiford added his name to the score sheet in the second minute of added on time (90+2) to seal the win for Conquerors which are hoping to topple the GDF as they have been second best in the first half of season two as well as in the League Leaders playoff.
The league will resume on Sunday April 2nd at the Buxton ground where a double header will be contested. Monedderlust FC will come up against home team Buxton from 16:00hrs with the feature clash pitting Victoria Kings against Fruta conquerors.
Players will now be waiting to see if the make the cut for the Guyana vs Martinique friendly international which will be contested at eth Mackenzie Sports Club ground on Tuesday March 28th, next from 20:00hrs.
