GCF 70-Mile Road Race…Jamal John makes it 2 out of 2; outsprints Hicks and Leung
In another commanding performance, Team Coco’s Jamal John pedaled to victory, his second in as many races when the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) held its second points race of the season on the East Coast Demerara highway, yesterday.

John stopped the clock in the 70-mile contest at Two Hours 37 Minutes 10 Seconds (2h 37m 10s), outmuscling the United Club duo of Andrew Hicks (12 points) and Raphael Leung (10 points) in the process as the trio battled for the top spot on the home straight.
John was also classical in the first race held in February when he rode home unchallenged in the 75-mile showdown from the City to the Linden Soesdyke Highway and back.
This time around, he was pushed all the way and responded admirably to win a close contest. With the win, John now moves to 30 points and pole position; the GCF informing that points accumulated will play a major role in the selection of cyclists to don national colours at overseas engagements.
Junior Niles (8 points) turned the tables on close rival Lear Nunes to claim the 4th place with the 5th to 10th positions occupied by Briton John (6 points), Lear Nunes (5 points), Dwayne Gibbs Jnr. (4 points), Jason Cameron (3 points), Eric Sankar (2 points) and Everal Mundy (1 point) in that order.
Twenty-one riders faced starter’s orders yesterday but there was a notable absence of a number of leading riders. (Franklin Wilson)
