Led by a splendid all-round performance by skipper Marvan Prashad, Berbice defeated defending champions Demerara by five wickets to capture Guyana Cricket Board Dave West Indian Imports inter-over county U-15 50-over title yesterday at Bourda.
Watched by a handful of spectators, Demerara decided to bat on an easy paced pitch and lost Shoaib Shaw who was bowled Hemraj Harilall for nine before Chad Shivratan was run out for four to leave the score at 32-2. Movindra Dindyal and Andre Seepersaud added 33 for the third wicket with level-headed batting in favourable sunshine before Berbice struck in quick succession.
Prashad trapped Seepersaud lbw for 10, while Dindyal, who timed the ball well, fell in similar fashion to Harilall for a top score of 24, leaving the score at 62-4. Steady bowling by the Berbicians restricted the host with only Brandon Jaikarran being the only other batsman to reach double figures with 12 as Demerara were bowled out for 90 in 45.5 overs. Prashad was the pick of the bowlers with 3-14, while Daniel Dharamdat claimed 2-13, Harilall 2-17 and Garav Ramesh 2-23.
Medium pacer Devanand Khemraj removed opener Anthony Williams without scoring as Berbice lost their first wicket with the score on two. Seepersaud then uprooted the stumps of Dharamdat for a duck, while Ricardo Ramdheol was run out for eight as Berbice slipped 19-3. The consistent Seepersaud then bowled Sharwan Chitnarine without scoring before Daniel Mootoo removed Vikash Subnarine for 10, leaving Berbice facing defeat at 40-5. But Prashad kept his team hopes alive with sensible batting.
Despite being put down twice, the right hander kept his composure to add 51 for the sixth wicket with Asif Amoi to ensure his team lift the title. The duo survived some anxious moments as they rotated the strike nicely and picked up the odd boundaries. Prashad struck two fours to remain unbeaten on 39, while Amoi made 24 not out with a solitary boundary. Seepersaud claimed 2-9 while there was one wicket each for Mootoo and Khemraj.
Prashad was named the MVP and man-of-the-match in a game which saw the absence of a third umpire.
