Left arm spinner Chanderpaul Ramraj grabbed four wickets to lead Demerara to an exciting 10-run victory over Berbice when the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Dave West Indian Imports inter county U15 50-over tournament continued yesterday at Enmore.
Ramraj finished with 4-21 as Berbice were bowled out for 99 in 48.3 overs after they restricted Demerara, who decided to bat, for 109-9.
Openers Shoaib Shaw and Movindra Dindyal added 37 for the first wicket with both batsmen rotating the strike nicely before left arm spinner Abdul Ramsammy handed Berbice the breakthrough by having Dindyal caught at mid-off for 10. Shaw continued to time the ball well and put on 41 for the second wicket with Chad Shivratan before he was bowled by Garav Ramesh for 36. Ramesh then had Shivratan caught and bowled for 17 to leave the score at 82-3. The rest of the batting struggled to get the ball off the square as Berbice spinners maintained a tidy line to restrict the home team.
Ramesh finished with 3-18, while Ramsammy, Daniel Dharamdat and Marvan Prashad had one each.
Sharwan Chitnarine hit a full toss from pacer Negus Walters to cover to be caught for two as Berbice in reply lost their first wicket with the score on 14. Ricardo Ramdeal and Dharamdat added 23 for the second wicket before Dharamdat was run out for four. One run later Berbice most accomplished batsman Marvan Prashad was stumped off Ramraj without scoring before Ramdeal was run out for 15 as Berbice slipped to 44-4. Anthony Williams (04) and Farouk Subhan (01) fell in quick succession before a 26-run seven-wicket partnership between Reyed Karim and Ramsammy kept Berbice in the hunt.
While boundaries were hard to come by, the duo picked up singles with nudges and pushes until Karim was taken low down at cover by Walters off Brandon Jaikarran for nine. Without further addition, Ramsammy was run out for 12 with his team 34 shy of victory and two wickets in hand. Akash Harilall and Saif Amoi took the total to 90 before Hariall was caught off Ramraj for four. Amoi and Ramesh (04*) inched Berbice closer to victory, but with 10 to get from two overs, Ramraj bowled Amoi for 13 to assure his team a place in Sunday’s final.
Berbice were aided by 31 extras as Jaikaran, Walters and Andre Seepersaud had one wicket apiece. Ramesh was named man-of-the-match.
