With handcuffed hands behind his back, Police Corporal, Shavon Marks, still managed to shield his face while being escorted to the police lock ups at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Corporal Marks had just pleaded not guilty to charges of illegal arms and ammunition possession after he was allegedly caught attempting to facilitate the smuggling of an AK 47 assault rifle out of the Tactical Service Unit (TSU) compound, Eve Leary Georgetown.
Corporal Marks, 36, of Rose Hall Corentyne, Berbice, is accused of having an AK 47 rifle in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence on February 28. It was further alleged that on the same day, he had 40 live rounds in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licences.
The police rank, a father of two, was remanded to prison until March 22.
According to Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, police received information that the defendant was planning to sell the AK 47 rifle. Jones disclosed that a sting operation was set up and Corporal Marks was seen handing over the rifle to an individual at TSU compound. The individual was seen placing the gun into a car which was later driven out of the compound, Jones added.
The car was intercepted and a search was conducted during which the rifle along with ammunition was found. Prosecutor Jones said that an individual told investigators that the police rank gave him the gun to sell.
During a bail petition, Attorney Bernard DeSantos, argued that the illegal items were not found in his client’s possession. According to the lawyer, the gun and ammunition were found in someone’s car. Corporal Marks, the lawyer said, had been on open arrest pending investigations in the matter.
Further the lawyer refuted reports in the media which stated that his client had escaped while in custody. DeSantos informed the court that Corporal Marks proceeded on sick leave after tendering a medical certificate from a doctor.
Prosecutor Jones opposed bail for the defendant on the grounds that no special reasons were provided to the court.
Based on reports, ranks from the Major Crimes Investigation Unit arrested Corporal Marks and a civilian following the gun find. The motor vehicle was also impounded at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown. Based on information received, the corporal who worked on the evening of February 28, reportedly collected the weapon and placed it in the vehicle. It is alleged that the following morning a civilian entered the TSU compound and attempted to drive out with the vehicle. Reports indicate that the individual was stopped by security guards which resulted in the vehicle being searched.
Nevertheless, it is still unclear how Corporal Marks was able to hide his face with the white jersey since his hands were handcuffed behind his back when he walked out of the courtroom and into the prisoner’s chute.
The cop spent several minutes inside the prisoner’s chute before he was led away to court lock ups by another rank who was seen in the prisoner’s chute with Corporal Marks. It is suspected that the rank assisted Corporal Marks with covering his face.
